I am a newly recovering addict who is slowly learning how to live again. It is not always easy, but it's definitely an interesting road. I am realizing that fear has played a larger-than-life role in my illness. It has dominated me in every aspect of life and must be defeated. They say, "Words without work is dead". I am ready to share all of me, the good and bad. I thought long and hard about pouring out my soul for any Joe-Shmo to read and judge. The fact of the matter is that people are dying from addiction at record pace, largely due to social stigmas. We are afraid to ask for help for fear of being judged or ridiculed. Addiction IS a very real chronic disease which must be treated daily. Without proper treatment, we die. If I keep silent, I am facilitating the misguided myths, misconceptions and the unbelievable ignorance surrounding this disease. I am ok with my truth today and if my experience can help just one person gain hope, this will all be worth it.
